Deep Lore: Mario wouldn't let himself get captured. This is a Coupe that Mario hesitantly agreed to due to his disdain for monarchies. The final moments of the animation are of him feeling regret that Peach was the first on the chopping block.

Pretty cool! I take that the Green things represent greed, and killing what they reproduce for more power is an allegory for humanity.
